A “try-something-new” mashup for Watercooler Wednesday

Welcome to Watercooler Wednesday, where the water is above-average, the topics are bubbly, and the company is sparkling.

This week is a mash-up of awesome blog posts.  The theme:

Try something new!

For the adventurous…

1.  Join a weekend rugby team.  Not only will you get some exercise, but you’ll learn a new language; phrases such as “Enough with the argy-bargy” and “hands in the ruck is a no-no.” Teacher/writer/humorist Leanne Shirtliffe tells us about rugby as a cultural experience in 13 Rugby Phrases that Sound Dirty but Aren’t.  Maybe you’ll even learn the haka. Not familiar with the haka?  Check the clip below:

Clay was SO brave...but I thought the gator was bigger.

2.  Try ‘gator wrestling.  Professor/writer/thrill-seeker Clay Morgan recounts his adventures in Gatorland in Behind the Scenes at Gatorland.

3.  How about a canopy zipline tour?  Our family joined a group that ranged from 10 to 80 years old at Ace Adventures in Minden, West Virginia.  For the full account of our adventures, where we hosted Leanne Shirliffe’s Thing 1 and Thing 2, check out Thing 1 and Thing 2’s Excellent West Virginia Adventure.

For the not-so-adventurous…

1.  Give Gears of War3 a whirl in the comfort of your living room.  After all, you’re never too old for cathartic digital violence, and social media Jedi Master Kristen Lamb shows you the Way in Gears of War – Playtime, Obsession, Foundation of a Happy Marriage.

2.  Lonely?  Want to impress your friends?  Sign up for a fake girlfriend who will text you or even call you.  Author Piper Bayard tells us about it in her post The End is Near (and we deserve it)…fake texting girlfriends.

3.  Try your hand at fishing.  In his post Why I Enjoy Fishing, Southern-story writer Kerry Meacham talks about what makes this classic past-time so wonderful.

4.  Try renovating your space along the principles of Feng Shui.  Romance writer Tawna Fenske takes us along on her feng shui transformation in her humorous post Feng Shui sounds dirty if you say it right.

5.  Learn a new boardgame.  Game designer and blogger Paul Owen (yes, we are related) talks about bringing a party game to a work potluck in Wits and Wagers at Work.

6.  Read a banned book.  Did you know that the American Library Association had designated last week “Banned Book Week”?  But hey, it’s never too late!  In her post Banned Book Week, mystery writer Elizabeth Craig gives us a list of books that have been banned at one time or another, and shares her thoughts about banning any book.

These are just a few ideas – I’m sure you can come up with many more!

How about you?  Done anything new recently?  What was it, and what made you decide to try it?  Are you the adventurous or the not-so-adventurous type?  I’d love to hear from you.

Until next time,

Kathy

Thanks for the link Kathy. Several blogs I don’t read here, so I’m off to “try something new.”

I am already laughing at the “Feng Shui Sounds Dirty” post and I haven’t even read it yet.

Thanks for the shout out. 🙂 Honoured! (And for you, honored!)

Ha!! I totally want to gator wrestle. I think I’d be great at it! I want to read all of these so badly right now, but I have an appointment. Will have to come back!

After reading this post, I realize I’m a complete bore. I haven’t tried anything new lately, not even the stuff for the ‘non-adventurous’. The only thing that comes to mind is a new brand of yogurt. I tried that yesterday. It was delicious.

I’m here via a link on Twitter from @Samuel_Clemons and glad I did! Fun post to read. 😀

The only really new thing I have tried lately is dancing to the rap song “Baby Got Back” by Sir Mixalot at my 41st high school reunion a couple weekends ago. Not a good idea when you haven’t danced much in years. About the time he finished saying “I like big butts…” I threw mine out of gear, where it remains to this day.

Would I do it again? YES!

    😀 cath
