Happy “Donut Day”!

…or “Fasnacht” Day, an old Pennsylvania Dutch tradition. It’s celebrated the day before Ash Wednesday, on the same day as Fat Tuesday, aka Mardi Gras. A fasnacht is a pastry deep-fried in lard, similar to a donut, often dusted with sugar. The fasnacht tradition has merged with the Polish paczki (a donut filled with jelly that was traditionally eaten the week before Lent), and so fasnachts are often filled with creme or jelly now, too.

I wish I could give you each a donut to celebrate! World peace through donuts…maybe it could catch on? Instead, I’m over at Misterio Press today, talking about another sugar-and-fat-laden treat: chocolate. Specifically, a brief history of chocolate. Did you know there had to be a regulation to keep brick dust out of chocolate? I know, crazy, right?

Hope to see you there! Here’s the link again: Chocolate through Time.

What’s your favorite decadent dessert? I’d love to hear from you.

Until next time,

Kathy

My gal’s family is Polish so I know all about this. We had one today. Now my butt is heading to the gym.
