National Pretzel Day, April 26th

So today is pretty special (and not just because it’s Friday).

It’s PRETZEL DAY!

To me, pretzels really mean…soft pretzels. Yum…

A few years ago, I took a one-day German cooking class with a girlfriend of mine. We learned to make all sorts of German foods, most of which I forget now. The one thing that eclipsed them all was learning how to make soft pretzels. You see, I’m not an accomplished yeast baker, and I usually stay away from those kinds of recipes. But with a little coaching on how long to knead the dough (and eventually getting a Cuisinart stand mixer with a dough hook), this is now a recipe I make regularly. Even my next-door neighbor (a VERY accomplished baker of all sorts of yeasty things) absolutely adores these pretzels.

So in honor of PRETZEL DAY, here’s my fave soft pretzel recipe. Enjoy!

Tip: I leave the dough to rise a bit longer than this, for a fluffier pretzel. Maybe an hour and fifteen minutes.

What’s your favorite recipe you like to make regularly? I’d love to hear from you.

Until next time,

Kathy

P.S. – I have book news! The seventh book of the Concordia Wells Mysteries, UNSEEMLY FATE, will be released May 1st, and is currently available as a pre-order. It seems that not even marriage can squelch Concordia’s sleuthing nature…

Check out my Home Page for the blurb and other details. Thanks!

My favourite regular recipe is the bread my husband makes each week. He created his own sourdough starter, and each week he bakes multiple loaves of soft brown bread with lots of seeds – so yummy! After a while he started making a couple of sacrificial rolls with each batch, to keep me from making untimely inroads on the hot fresh loaves 🙂
